WHAT YOU’LL DO
Visit the home of a family in Teotitlan del Valle and share with them an intimate and authentic experience.
Every November, the families of Teotitlan come together to celebrate their lost ones, by preparing a delicious feast while building an altar full of offerings for their lost ones. Experience a close-up and private experience with one of the families of this colorful town.
Teotitlan del Valle is a town located 25km East of Oaxaca City. Teotitlán has been renowned for its weaving wares since pre-Hispanic times. Known for its textiles, especially rugs, which are woven on hand-operated looms, from wool obtained from local sheep and dyed mainly with local, natural dyes. They combine historical Zapotec designs with contemporary designs such as reproductions of famous artists’ work. This experience gets you up close to the traditions of the iconic world-known arts and crafts of this community.
The traditional lunch in this celebration is Tamales. The family unites a day before to begin all the cooking ritual that involves this exquisite meal. We will share the table with the local family to share and learn from this tradition.
The traditional Altar (ofrenda) is decorated with all the traditional offerings such as Mezcal, Bread, Candles, Flowers, Candy, Cigarettes, Fruit, and items that were favorite amongst the lost ones. In the afternoon, we will walk in the town and visit the central square and church. Due to the unfortunate events of this year, the cemeteries will be closed, but we will walk close to Teotitlan´s cemetery to get a glimpse of the beautiful decoration that the families bring to the graves. We will also visit the water reservoir of Teotitlan, for scenic views of the majestic mountains that surround the town.
Later in the afternoon, we will walk with the family, to visit other peoples homes, to bring them offerings for their altar. We will bring with us plenty of flowers as a respectful gesture to the families that will host us during this day. Hot chocolate, mezcal, bread and fruit will be shared.
After Sunset we will share some more time with the family before we head back to Oaxaca City.
This experience is designed for people interested in seeing the true traditions that occur in this rich cultural land.
