Hiking in La Mixteca
Deep into the mountainous region of the Mixteca Alta lies a sacred place filled with opportunities for hiking, expeditions, and adventure. The Mixtec are the third largest group of indigenous people in modern México and have complex historical traditions intrinsically linking them to the land. They refer to themselves as Ñuu Savi, “People of the Rain” and occupy a region that lies between the vast mountain ranges of Oaxaca, Puebla, and Guerrero.

Only 3 hours away from Oaxaca City you’ll find the picturesque town of Santiago Apoala, one of Mixteca’s main destinations for hiking, adventure, and culture. Mixteca peoples refer to this special place as Yutza Tó Ón, which means “river where the lord comes from.” Apoala offers exquisite hiking trails, breathtaking waterfalls, and lookout points that will make you appreciate Oaxaca’s unique natural beauty.

Like many Oaxacan communities in the Mixteca region, Apoala is relatively isolated and relies on indigenous agricultural knowledge to sustain their communal way of life. On our tour to Apoala we connect you with knowledgeable local guides who eloquently present their profound understanding of local flora and fauna. Along our hike through the mountains we’ll find a series of peaceful lagoons which will calm your soul and connect you to the power of Mother Earth.
