Join us for an early morning tour that is surely one of the best things to do in Oaxaca.  On this experience we travel through Oaxaca’s central valley as the sun rises, arriving at our freind, Emelia’s home for exquisite memelitas.  After our breakfast, we continue to our adventure at the petrified waterfalls of Hierve el Agua, where you’ll have a chance to swim and hike to one of our secret local spots. Following our hike, we’ll visit Teotitlán del Valle, where Josefina’s family will take you on a vibrant journey through the world of natural pigments, wool tapestries, Zapotec chemistry and delicious Oaxacan food.

On our hiking tour to the Sierra Norte we take you deep within the mountains of Oaxaca where a network of Zapotec communities collectively manage their territory and preserve their forests.  This network, formally called the Pueblos Mancomunados, has also created regenerative travel ecotourism projects offering breathtaking hikes that introduce you to one of the most biodiverse forest areas in the world. We partner with local guides to create integral experiences that not only introduce you to the natural beauty of the Sierra Norte, but also the concept of Comunalidad; the communal value system that governs many indigenous communities in Oaxaca.

HIKING IN THE ENCHANTED FOREST OF IXTEPEJI

Hike amongst massive pine and oak trees teeming with life in Ixtepeji’s enchanted forest. This communal eco-park takes you on a journey through Oaxacan plant and fungal biodiversity as perfectly maintained trails wind up to an impressive lookout point.  This mystical destination is filled with urban myths, tales of forest gnomes playing trickery on humans, and powerful forest spirits called chaneques who bless those who enter the space respectfully.

HIKE FROM BENITO JUÁREZ TO CUAJIMOLOYAS IN THE PUEBLOS MANCOMUNADOS

HIKE EL CAMINO REAL,
LATUVI – LACHATAO

El Camino Real (18km), was once a prehispanic path that connected the Zapotec region of the Sierra Norte with the Central Valley.  This trail is an ancient relic of extensive Mesoamerican trade routes that expanded across what we now call México, connecting advanced indigenous civilizations such as the Teotihuacanos, Mayas, and Olmecs from the Gulf of México to the Pacific via Oaxaca.  Transport yourself through time as you retrace the footsteps of Oaxaca’s ancestors, observing the lush vegetation and mystical moss that is typical of this clouded forest ecosystem.

HIKE SIERRA NORTE: PUEBLOS MANCOMUNADOS

The Pueblos Mancomunados are composed of 8 indigenous communities who have collectively organized to protect their territory from multinational corporatation’s resource extraction.  These communities lay the framework for the global efforts we must make in order to preserve our ancient ecosystems and combat the climate crisis.  On our hikes, Comunalidad will be a primary topic of conversation as local guides illuminate the unique traditions that impact their communal approach to life.  Throughout our time in the Sierra we will also organize hikes, picnics, meditations and activities to express our gratitude for this amazing forest.

HIKE AND WATERFALLS IN SANTIAGO APOALA

The town of Santiago Apoala is tucked away in a canyon deep in the heart of the Mixteca region of Oaxaca about 2 and a half hours away from Oaxaca City.  The hiking tours we offer in this region are sincerely some of the best hikes in Oaxaca.  We will visit a beautiful turquoise river deriving from a fresh spring in the community which winds through this mystical town forming waterfalls that are sure to amaze.  Join us as we explore Apoala’s stunning waterfalls and hike through beautiful juniper, tepezcohuite, and oak trees towards the natural pool, Mini Tidaá.  Legend has it that this natural pool was where the entire Mixtec culture was born with the first man and woman spawning out of its sacred waters.

IXTEPEJI FOREST

Hike through some of Oaxaca’s best hiking trails accompanied by rescue dogs from our organization, Caravana Canina. On this special tour, you’ll have an opportunity to enjoy Ixtepeji’s enchanted forest alongside rescue dogs who are looking for responsible families.  All proceeds from this adventure go to funding spay & neuter campaigns, providing additional resources for foster families, and deworming and vaccinating dogs around Oaxaca.
