Join us for Day of the Dead where you’ll be immersed into uniquely Oaxacan traditions that honor and remember our loved ones. BIKE RIDE
One of the best art tours in Oaxaca City, our Street Art Bike Ride takes you to three emblematic neighborhoods in the historic downtown area where you’ll learn about the talented artists that grace our walls, highlighting different street art techniques, and relevant social movements. We’ll also visit a screen printing workshop where you’ll learn about how this particular technique has become an essential way for Oaxacan artists to manifest their political messaging. Along the journey we’ll have time to stop for a traditional drink or snack.

Take a stroll with us along the cobblestoned streets of Oaxaca where we’ll observe Oaxaca’s screen prints, murals, and urban art, providing you with important historical context so that you can better understands artist’s messaging. Our street art tour illuminates the complex realities of Oaxaca, explaining important social movements and actvism in the state. We’ll visit 3 different neighborhoods, pop into some art collectives and finally, go to a litle café for a delicious treat.

ARTISANAL MEZCAL EXPERIENCE
This mezcal tour focuses on going deeper into the rich history of this ancestral drink focusing on its context, wild varieties and the mysticism that surrounds the spirit. We begin by strolling through an agave field offering a perfect moments for some photos. The mezcal producer we work with is a community leader in the town of Unión Zapata, advocating for a more sustainable industry that values soil biodiversity. Following our walk, we’ll head to the palenque (mezcal distillery) where all the magic happens! We’ll learn about the process of cooking, grinding, fermenting and distilling delicious mezcal.

DAY OF THE DEAD TRADITIONS WITH
CLAY ARTISAN FAMILIES
– SANTA MARÍA ATZOMPA
On this Day of the Dead experience we’ll travel to the town of Santa María Atzompa, celebrating this sacred holiday with a family of clay artisans who will share their unique cultural traditions with you. This tour highlights the chronological story of the Zapotec people, first visiting the Atzompa Archaeological Site for a beautiful sunset, then traveling down to the community to respectfully celebrate our ancestors with host families. Here, we’ll be able to create our own altars and learn about the traditions that make Day of the Dead so special.

DAY OF THE DEAD IN SAN GABRIEL ETLA
FIESTA + PARADE
Venture to a rarely visited community on the outskirts of Oaxaca to celebrate Day of the Dead amoungst friends and family. San Gabriel Etla is decorated with cempasúchil flowers and elaborate altars inviting loved ones that have passed on to the underworld to indulge in mole, chocolate and mezcal on their trip back to the land of the living. Here, you’ll learn about the traditions of the community and participate in a parade. During this parade a folk dance group called, El Cuadro will speak about all types of local gossip enacting important events in the past year of the town. Truly one of the best Day of the Dead tours in Oaxaca!

Our Day of the Dead tours connect you with local families from indigenous communities where you can live Oaxaca’s ancestral traditions. Teotitlán del Valle is a Zapotec community located in the Central Valley region that conserves a great deal of its culture through the Zapotec language, cuisine, music, traditions and dance. As we walk through the community we’ll learn about the unique ways Teotitecos celebrate their ancestors, leaving essential offerings that demonstrate our values of reciprocity and respect. Join us for Day of the Dead as we collectively celebrate the arrival of our loved ones to the altar alongside close friends in the community.
