IZTACCIHUATL EXPEDITION

Guided Hike: 5 km / Fitness level: Extreme / Group Size: Up to 8 people

>WHAT YOU’LL DO

Altitude: 5,220 masl

Her name translates as “white woman” and comes from the Nahuatl language. It is 65 km from the Mexican capital (on the road it is 63 km to the Paso de Cortés). Like several mountains in Mexico, it was venerated and idolized in the past and is a cause for admiration because its shape matches the silhouette of a recumbent woman. It measures 6 km in a straight line from top of head to toe and ranks third among the highest mountains in the country and eighth in North America, behind Mount Lucania at 5,226 meters above sea level in Alaska.

Its fields of ice and snow have always attracted the attention of mountaineers for its spectacular nature. Due to its greater complexity compared to the other two highest volcanoes in Mexico, it offers interesting and varied ascent routes on icy terrain. In some places of the mountain it exhibits incipient manifestations of activity such as fumaroles, springs and rocks altered by volcanic gases.

The ecosystems of this mountain range from coniferous forests (pines and fir trees), oaks, mountain mesophyll and mainly high mountain zacatal. There is also secondary vegetation induced by human activities and agricultural crops.
