Hike Sierra Norte, Pueblos Mancomunados 2 Days + 1 Night
Guided Hike: 25 km / Fitness level: Intermediate / Group Size: Up to 10 people
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Join us at 8:00 a.m. at the Coyote Aventuras office where our adventure begins with a trip into remote Sierra Norte communities nestled in the northern mountains of the city. After a scenic hour and a half drive, we’ll arrive at Cuajimoloyas, one of the ‘Pueblos Mancomunados’, where a delicious breakfast picnic awaits.
In Cuajimoloyas, you’ll be amazed the breathtaking landscapes of rolling mountains, wispy clouds, and verdant pine forests as we explore this picturesque town. Delve into the rich tapestry of Cuajimoloyas, uncovering its history, culture, and vibrant community life, before venturing into the embrace of the magnificent forest that surrounds the village. One of our primary topics of conversation will be Comunalidad, the ways in which local communities construct their worldview. Comunalidad is the foundation for how Sierra Norte communities organize their territory, local governance, tequios, and festivities.
In Cuajimoloyas, we’ll begin hiking on a stunning trail adorned with flowers, towering maguey plants, golden cornfields, and pine and oak trees—a cornerstone of the local biodiversity. Remember, these hikes reach altitudes of up to 3,200 meters (10,500 feet). At Coyote, we believe that the communal processes for guarding the forest territory have contributed to an impeccable management of forest resources. In these communities, every time a tree is cut, the community mobilizes to plant two more. On our hike, we’ll take a moment to savor a picnic amidst nature’s splendor and engage in meditative reflection.
After the hike, we’ll embark on a Community Tour, where you’ll have the chance to interact with locals and learn about their daily life, customs, and collective efforts to maintain the forest’s health. We then head for a well-deserved lunch, where the flavors of the region will nourish you after a day of exploration.
In the late afternoon, we’ll check in to our charming cabins. Nestled in one of the original Pueblos Mancomunados, the village offers a peaceful retreat, where ancient Zapotec heritage intertwines with the tranquility of rural life. As the sun sets, you can unwind, reflect, and immerse yourself in the timeless charm of the village. Dinner will then be served, offering another opportunity to experience the local flavors.
The next morning, for those who wish to start the day early, an optional sunrise hike will allow us to witness the serene beauty of the mountains at dawn. Afterward, we’ll gather for breakfast before heading to the renowned Camino Real – Lachatao trail. This hike offers a journey through the forests and history of the region, providing further insight into the natural and cultural wealth of the Sierra Norte.
We’ll conclude the hike, followed by a relaxing lunch. Afterward, we’ll make our way back to Oaxaca City, completing our unforgettable journey through the Sierra Norte.
