ECHOS OF THE SIERRA: A JOURNEY INTO MIXE HERITAGE
The Sierra Mixe has long been home to rich spiritual and medicinal practices, deeply rooted in the traditions of the Mixe people. One such practice is the Machucado ritual, a sacred ceremony that has been passed down through generations. This ritual, centered around the use of sacred plants and fungi, serves as a means of healing, divination, and connecting with the spiritual world. The Mixe people, with their profound knowledge of local flora and sacred rituals, have always held a deep respect for these natural medicines, using them to promote physical and spiritual well-being.
However, like many indigenous practices, the arrival of colonialism had a significant impact on these traditions, causing them to fade from mainstream recognition. Despite this, the Mixe people’s resilience and the sacred power of their rituals have allowed these practices to endure. Today, the Machucado ritual remains a vital part of their cultural heritage, offering a pathway to spiritual insight and healing. As interest in these ancient practices grows, particularly in the context of contemporary spiritual exploration, there is hope for their responsible reintroduction, both within the Mixe community and beyond. The Sierra Mixe retreat offers an opportunity to engage with these traditions respectfully, fostering a deeper understanding of the Mixe worldview and the wisdom embedded in their rituals, while promoting a renewed connection with nature and the spirit.

DAY 1
Awakening the Spirit: A Journey into Mixe Craft and Culinary Traditions
You will be introduced to the spiritual heart of the Mixe people through the sacred Machucado ritual. This ceremony is a powerful welcoming to the spiritual world, where the land and its energies are honored, and the connection between the people and the earth is deepened. You will begin by grounding yourself in nature, creating a personal altar in your cabin as a sacred space for reflection and intention setting. As the day unfolds, you will immerse yourself in the ritual, which involves offerings and prayers to the spirits of the land, inviting guidance, protection, and harmony. This experience will mark your entry into the Mixe worldview, where every part of nature is seen as alive with spiritual significance. After the ritual, you’ll have time to reflect on your connection to the land and prepare for the journey ahead.
