Scenic Bike Ride from the Sierra Norte to the Central Valley of Oaxaca

WHAT YOU’LL DO
Join us at Coyote Adventures at 8:00 a.m. for a unique mountain biking excursion to the mystical Sierra Norte of Oaxaca. After a brief introduction to the day’s activities, we’ll hop on the Coyote van and head to Cuajimoloyas, a Zapotec village located 3,000 meters (9,800 feet) above sea level.
Cuajimoloyas is a community surrounded by towering pines and beautiful oaks, forming the base of the Sierra Norte’s cloud forest ecosystem. This region is one of the most biodiverse in Oaxaca, and our mountain biking adventure will descend a total of 1,700 meters.
In Cuajimoloyas, you’ll enjoy a traditional picnic with local products. After recharging, we’ll begin our scenic descent toward Teotitlán del Valle.
If you haven’t been able to bring your mountain bike, don’t worry! We provide high-quality bikes and safety equipment perfect for your adventure. The first 9 km will take you to the village of Benito Juárez, where you’ll encounter a gentle 2 km ascent. If you’d prefer to skip this part, you can wait in the Coyote van, which will take you to the mountaintop’s hanging bridge, offering 360º views of the valley.
Next, we’ll descend toward Teotitlán del Valle, enjoying a well-maintained trail and refreshing air that will energize you as you take in the stunning views of Oaxaca’s landscapes. As the scenery shifts from forests to meadows, you’ll pick up speed on smooth dirt trails, with the wind at your back and the valley views beneath your feet.
Once in Teotitlán, you’ll have the chance to explore its Zapotec crafts, renowned worldwide for their vibrant tapestries and textiles. We’ll also enjoy a delicious traditional meal before learning how the Zapotecs have used wild herbs for centuries to dye the threads with which they weave these intricate tapestries. The process is fascinating and will help you understand the deep connection between the local culture and nature.
We’ll return to the city of Oaxaca at 5:00 p.m., after a day filled with adventure, culture, and natural beauty.
