E-BIKE TOUR: MOUNTAIN BIKING THROUGH THE sierra norte forest
Guided MTB Tour: 10 km / Fitness level: Intermediate / Group Size: Up to 8 people
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Join us at Coyote Adventures for our mountain biking excursion. We’ll start by meeting at our office at 8:00 a.m. After a brief introduction to the day’s activities, we’ll hop on the van and head toward the mystical Sierra Norte.
This electric bike adventure takes us through the sacred lands of the Pueblos Mancomunados, a collective of eight rural communities located in the mountains of the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca. These communities—Benito Juárez, Cuajimoloyas, La Nevería, Lachatao, Latuvi, Llano Grande, San Miguel Amatlán, and Yavesía—work together to protect their territories from transnational corporate exploitation, focusing on sustainability, the preservation of their Zapotec heritage, and regenerative ecotourism. They are a beacon of light in the world of such travel.
La Comunalidad, the fundamental principle of these communities, is based on four key values: communal territory, the communal assembly, the tequio (a form of community labor), and festivities. These principles guide the communities’ way of life, ensuring they continue to thrive in harmony.
The route is 35 kilometers (about 22 miles) long and crosses the stunning Sierra Norte, taking us to our final destination in Lachatao. Along the way, we will immerse ourselves in the lush green mountain forests.
We start in the village of Benito Juárez, at the heart of this Zapotec mountain region. We’ll bike until we reach a beautiful viewpoint, a perfect spot for a picnic overlooking the Sierra. There, our guide will share stories about the Pueblos Mancomunados, giving us a clearer understanding of their worldview and life philosophy.
With our bellies full and minds refreshed, we will continue our journey toward Cuajimoloyas, crossing large mountains and peaceful forests. Upon arrival, we will walk through the cobblestone streets of the village, where local hosts will talk to us about La Comunalidad. Then, we’ll venture deeper into the forest, among pines and mountain agaves, until we reach the mystical Cerro del Jaguar. This sacred place is filled with Zapotec stories and rituals passed down through generations.
Finally, we arrive in Lachatao, where we will enjoy a traditional meal with local drinks, such as hot chocolate or freshly made aguas frescas. At the end of the day, we will return to the city of Oaxaca around 5:00 p.m., with a deep sense of having experienced something unique that celebrates cultural tradition and nature.
