Hierve el Agua Sunrise
Guided Hike: 5 km / Fitness level: Intermediate / Group Size: Up to 10 people
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Our journey begins nice and early at 4:45 AM at the Coyote Aventuras office. Please ring doorbell A once you arrive to let your trip leader know that you’re outside. After some brief introductions it’s time to hop in the Coyote van and chase the sunrise out to Hierve el Agua. We hope you’re ready for an unforgettable experience of play, relaxation and contemplation in Oaxaca!
As we pass through the Central Valley you’ll see how the first rays of light illuminate the Oaxacan sky. Riding through the central valley takes us back 10,000 years, when small bands of tribes living in the caves of Yagul & Mitla began to domesticate a wild herb called teocintle, eventually producing what we now know as corn. We’ll continue up into the mountains where, with the cool breeze of the morning, you’ll enjoy a brisk walk around the petrified waterfalls. This geological formation is truly unique in the world and its existence is the result of a process occurring over millions of years. At Hierve el Agua pools of mineral water slowly drip down the mountainside eventually forming a unique canvas painted natural dyes like the deep red of iron, green of sulfur, and white of calcium. Here, we’ll prepare a delicious picnic with traditional foods while you look out on some of the most astounding landscapes Oaxaca has to offer. If you enjoy a little morning cold plunge, there will also be an opportunity to swim!
Afterwards, we will enter into the heart of Teotitlán, a town full of colors and traditions. Here, you will feel like a local walking through the market, admiring the church and browsing the quaint shops along the way. We will also have the opportunity to participate in a beeswax candle workshop where you’ll learn about a traditional Zapotec art form, creating something beautiful to take home.
The highlight of this journey will certainly be Josefina’s workshop. Her family is filled with incredible artists who maintain the cultural heritage through the textile artwork they produce on the loom. She will show you how natural dyes come to life in her workshop and you’ll be able to try it too. You’ll also enjoy a traditional homemade lunch in this very special place.
Finally, we’ll return to Oaxaca City, filled with stories and memories to share. This tour is not just a hike, it is a profound experience that will connect you with the cycles of nature, art and culture.
