Simple. Curated. Authentically Monte Alban.

Monte Alban is a pre-Columbian archaeological site located in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. It was built by the Zapotec civilization, who inhabited the area between 500 BC and 800 AD.

The site is located on a hill 400 meters above the valley of Oaxaca, and has an area of approximately 40 hectares. It is surrounded by a great stone wall and you are able to witness an impressive panoramic view of the surroundings.

The main squares are located in the center of the citadel, where the religious and administrative buildings of the Zapotec civilization were located. The Gran Plaza and the Plaza de los Danzantes, which contains more than 300 figures carved in relief in stone, stand out.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Monte Alban is its architecture. The buildings are constructed with large blocks of carved stone, and present great precision and symmetry in their design. In addition, many of them have elaborate reliefs and decorations, which show the artistic skill of the Zapotecs.

Monte Alban is an important testimony of the culture and history of the pre-Hispanic peoples of Mexico. Today, it is a popular tourist destination, visited by people from all over the world who wish to learn more about the fascinating history of this ancient civilization.

Instead of rushing through a list of landmarks, the tour explores Oaxaca through the themes that shape its identity.

During the experience you will:

  • Discover the sacred importance of maize in Mesoamerican civilization
  • Learn about Zapotec and Mixtec cultures and their worldview
  • Walk through the colonial city and its historical transformations
  • Explore local markets and traditional food culture
  • Encounter artisans preserving centuries-old traditions
  • Discover Oaxaca’s vibrant contemporary art scene

Every stop helps reveal another piece of Oaxaca’s living cultural story.

THE EXPERIENCE

BIENVENIDOS

A OAXACA CITY

Our journey begins in the historic center of Oaxaca, where we explore the city on foot through plazas, streets, and hidden corners that reveal layers of history and culture.

Rather than simply visiting landmarks, this experience is designed as a curated exploration of the essential dimensions that define Oaxaca today: history, traditions, food, and art.

HISTORY

Oaxaca’s past stretches back thousands of years.

Through museums, historic architecture, and cultural spaces, we trace the story of the civilizations that shaped the region — from the Zapotec and Mixtec cultures to the arrival of the Spanish and the birth of colonial Oaxaca.

These places help reveal how ancient beliefs, sacred landscapes, and colonial institutions continue to influence the city today.

CULTURE + TRADITIONS

Oaxaca is one of the most culturally vibrant regions in Mexico, where ancestral traditions remain part of everyday life.

We encounter the world of artisan craftsmanship, exploring traditions such as clay pottery, textile weaving, and the colorful carved figures known as alebrijes.

We also explore the deep relationship between the people of Oaxaca and maize, discovering traditional spaces where tortillas are made and cacao is ground to prepare chocolate — practices that have been preserved for generations.

FOOD + LOCAL FLAVORS

Food is one of the most powerful ways to understand Oaxaca’s culture.

In local markets we experience the aromas, colors, and ingredients that define Oaxacan cuisine. Along the way we taste seasonal fruits, fresh juices, and traditional street foods such as memelas, tamales, and dishes prepared with local herbs like hoja santa.

Each flavor tells part of the story of the region’s agricultural heritage and culinary creativity.

ART + CONTEMPORARY OAXACA

Oaxaca has become one of Mexico’s most important centers for contemporary art.

The tour explores cultural spaces influenced by visionary artists who helped transform Oaxaca into a global creative hub, while also visiting galleries that showcase the work of emerging Oaxacan artists today.

From modern art institutions to independent galleries and street art, we discover how creativity continues to shape Oaxaca’s cultural identity.
