Rock Climbing at La Meca

WHAT YOU’LL DO

This rock climbing adventure is perfect for our intermediate level climbers who would like to spend some time on beautiful overhanging volcanic rock that is in the shade all day!  We’ll start our rock climbing tour at 9:00AM at the Coyote Aventuras Office, where you’ll be able to enjoy a little coffee and refreshments before our journey.  Then, we’ll drive out to a small community called La Meca 25 minutes away from downtown Oaxaca City.

Upon arrival at La Meca, we’ll begin an easy 20 minute approach up to the crag. Once we have gone over all of our safety protocols, properly warmed up and checked our equipment, we’ll begin climbing some warm up routes.  If you’re lucky enough to visit the Meca during the rainy season, the crag is decorated with vibrant purple orchids and air plants that dangle from the cliffs above.  Our rock climbing tours also make it a priority that you learn about the local ecology and important conservation initiatives in our community!

After warming up on some beginner 5.10 rock climbing, we’ll take a small break to enjoy some local organic fruit and a small snack.  Then, it’s time to get back on the rock!  This is a perfect time to push yourself and try some of our five star intermediate level routes that give this hidden crag its prestige amongst local climbers.  Routes like Quimera (12a) and Cervero (12b) are extremely popular in the valley given their tremendous variety of crimps, slopers and challenging pockets that will put your finger strength to the test.

Finally, we’ll begin to clean the area, collecting all of our equipment for a nice hike up to a beautiful viewpoint where you can appreciate the Sierra Norte mountains, the Tule Tree and agave fields.  This will be the setting for our picnic where we’ll share stories of a solid day of trying hard on rock!  After our lunch, we will head back to Oaxaca City at 4:30PM  where you’ll be dropped off at the Coyote Aventuras office after an action-packed day.
