Rock Climbing + Zapotec Culture at Yagul

WHAT YOU’LL DO

We’ll begin our rock climbing tour at the Coyote Aventuras office at 10:00 AM where you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a little coffee and refreshments. You can also shop with a purpose at our store.  Then, we’ll start  our journey into the Central Valley making our first stop at the Zapotec archaeological site of Dainzú.  This site is roughly 30 minutes outside of Oaxaca City’s downtown area.  Here, we’ll explore some of the Zapotec pyramids of this ancient city, whose peak occupation was from 600 BCE – 200 CE, contemporary with Monte Albán.  We will leave a small offering of gratitude to the ancestors of this territory and begin driving another 30 minutes on to Yagul.  On our drive through the valley, we’ll witness some sacred treasures of the hunter gatherer period, observing some cave paintings that date back over 10,000 years and can be seen from the highway.

Upon arriving at Yagul, we’ll do a quick 5 minute easy approach to the crag where we’ll go over essential safety protocols and make sure our equipment is put on correctly.  Then we’ll set up a warm up top rope to evaluate your ability levels on rock.

Yagul offers a wide variety of beginner to intermediate level rock climbs that are certain to be fun and engaging!  After some climbing, we’ll enjoy a delicious traditional lunch.  Following lunch we’ll set up some more top ropes around the area where you’ll be able to get different perspectives of the valley.  Yagul’s landscapes are truly breathtaking as the crag looks over agave fields and ancient caves.

Once we’ve had our fill climbing, we’ll clean up our gear and head out to our friend Jerónimo’s home for a delicious traditional dinner and mezcal tasting.  A perfect way to end our active day on the rock!  We’ll drop you off at the Coyote Aventuras office in downtown Oaxaca at 8:30PM after a beautiful day out in the valley
